Fall Nature Walk Activity

Fall is such a wonderful season that comes as such a relief to so many who have endured high
temperatures that come along with the summer season. As we welcome the cooler weather, it is a time when many families are able to get outside for more extended periods of time and explore the nature and beauty that the season offers.

One activity that we love to do as a family is a fall nature walk. We set out on a nature trail with small bags for the children to collect pieces of nature in. They see this as a great adventure and can’t wait to get started. I carry the camera along to capture pictures of things that we can’t fit in a bag such as a tree full of fiery red leaves or a squirrel scooting from tree to tree.

As we walk, the children collect small items such as leaves, acorns and sticks. Upon returning home, I let them take their items out of their bags and glue them onto construction paper and make a fall nature walk book. I also print the pictures we took and they can add them to their book as well. After they get messy with the glue and we have given it time to dry we go back and write a little about what is on that page. If your children are too small to write you can skip this step or have them dictate to you what they would like to have written on this page.

Another fun and educational activity you can do on a nature walk is to have your kids collect acorns or leaves and then have them sort what they found into groups. One way is by acorns with caps and without caps. Another way to sort is the colors of the leaves. Use your creativity and let your children enjoy all the amazing aspects nature has to offer.
