Gwen Stefani’s New Harajuku Mini Clothing Line Scheduled to Hit Shelves at Target This Week – See The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Clothes for Kids)

I love Gwen Stefani, her natural beauty, her sense of style, her beautiful little family, so I was excited when I learned her Harajuku Mini line, created especially for Target is hitting stores this week. This is her third installment of the collection. I absolutely adored her last installment, which was mostly navy themed.

Upon first viewing the girls selections I was instantly transported back to my childhood in the late 70’s early 80’s when Strawberry Shortcake & Raggedy Ann & Andy were the stars of the day, plaid pants somehow matched with striped shirts, Dutch boy haircuts were all the rage  (Think the kid in the original Shining *shudder*), and kids clothing contained A LOT of primary colors.  I always looked back on those times thinking “man I will never dress my OWN kid like that”.  Sorry Gwen.

There is no doubt in my mind that Gwen was partially inspired by the clothing from her own childhood in the 70’s. Need proof? Here’s a picture of me circa 1977 & next to that one of the new girls outfits from the Harajuku Mini line. Don’t tell me you can’t see the similarities!

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

We’ll start with the bad first. There are a few pieces I couldn’t see myself buying for my children, as I’m not even sure what they are or what you’d call them. I think the one I found myself immediately drawn to (seen here on the left) speaks volumes all by itself. What is this thing? and is it polyester? Not that children need their forms flattered but I can’t imagine it would be flattering on anyone at all. I especially find the fact that the crotch area is yellow, a strange choice.

And then there are a few more items from the line that have “splashes” of color on them in the oddest of places. The pieces don’t’ seem to fit the Strawberry Shortcake type feel, and neither do they seem to fit into the line as a whole.

The ugly award goes to this pair of pants, hands down.  In this day and age when there is so much controversy over childhood obesity these pants might be considered poor timing.

Not everyone has the same taste, obviously, and even though there are quite a few strange pieces I’d never go for, there are a few timeless classics. So, last but not least, because I like to leave on a high note, here are a few pieces I find absolutely adorable.
