NUK® Single Expressive™ Manual Breast Pump Review & Giveaway (Now Closed)

NUKbreastpumpWhen I had my first son, who I started out breastfeeding, I knew that at some point in time I would have to leave him with his Father or Grandmother & I would need milk to feed him.  I went to the nearest store and I happened to find a manual breast pump on sale. At that time there was no way I could afford an electric pump. I came home & it took me forever to read the directions and put it together. It worked well, sometimes. It had a breast shield similar to the one that is found on the NUK and that seemed to help quite a bit.  The main problem for me was that it I have a bad finger & because of the way the pump was shaped it would cause serious fatigue in that hand, as well as the fact that it was super loud & had a little squeak to it. Anyone within ear shot could hear it & it made me uncomfortable when I’d try to pump at 1am when everyone was sleeping. I felt like I didn’t have any privacy. The other serious issue was that there were a lot of little tiny parts & they’d always fly off this way or that whenever I took the thing apart to wash it. Oh & did I mention washing it was a big chore. There were parts of it you just couldn’t get clean no matter how hard you tried! I actually found some kind of mildew in it once & was horrified. Actually as I write this I realize the whole pump was rather annoying.

The NUK Single Expressive Manual Pump is the total opposite of the first manual pump I owned. It has some great qualities for such an affordable pump & here is why:

  • Adjustable suction control
  • Massaging breast shield – helps stimulation of let-down
  • Easy to clean – very few parts, simple assembly (literally took 2 minutes)
  • Compact and lightweight – convenient for home or on-the-go
  • Perfect for occasional use
  • Has a stand so that it will not tip over and spill (every little oz. counts)
  • Quiet compared to other manual pumps I’ve used
  • Compatible with all NUK wide-neck bottles

Now, I have read reviews of this pump online and they’re not that great. People are saying it doesn’t get enough milk out & that the suction isn’t strong enough.  I can assure you that is not the case with the one I own. I used it about 2 weeks after coming home from the hospital & I was able to get a couple of ounces out within 10-15 minutes. I then later used my electric breast pump and had gotten nearly the same amount out.  I think it’s just a matter of knowing what your body is able to produce. After nursing 3 kids I’m pretty familiar with how my body is going to work.  I did have to play around with the adjustable suction control button (if that’s what you’d call it) & it was a little hard to find the perfect setting but there was definitely enough suction to get the job done.

I’d also like to point out that I am big breasted (feels weird saying that!) and the pump fit perfectly fine for the job it was doing. It really is just a matter of practice makes perfect when it comes to pumping.

Overall I love this little manual pump and because it goes together so quickly and has so few parts it’s perfect for taking along with you maybe on a car trip, camping, or if you’ll be visiting a friend for a while and will need to pump.
