Preparing For Halloween With #KmartHalloween–Win 1 of 5 $100 Gift Cards (Now Closed)

One of my favorite times of year is fast approaching. Halloween. I’ve always loved the holiday. Maybe it’s because I was brought up by a Mom who loved horror movies & Stephen King & grandparents who sat around watching scary black & white movies every weekend. I even married a man who made “horror” metal music & delved into the world of digital artwork, usually themed around horror. Rumor has it you may even find a couple album covers out there made by me. Once I had my first child he was named after our favorite actor, who of course starred in many horror movies. Vincent Price. So you can say I have a thing for Halloween.

Now that I’m a Mom of 3 little ones we’ve toned down a bit & Halloween preparations around our house are less scary & more centered around the season of fall. Over the past couple of years we’ve gathered up a few things that make Halloween decorating fun for us & for the kids & we put them in a big bin.

This weekend, the first weekend of fall we will get out our bin & we’ll start by letting Vincent & Aidan (4 & 2) hang window clings. They’re fast, they’re fun & they’re easy. Kids really feel like they’re helping when you let them do it themselves. (If they bunch them up you can always fix them later when they’re not looking). We’ll also set out all of our knickknacks on our shelves. Little glass pumpkins & things like that.

We’ll then fix up the yard a bit since we’ll be having so many trick or treaters stop by. We clean up the flower beds & this year we will be planting new mums. After this we’ll “plant” our new scarecrows that we just got not long ago so all the kids can see them when they come around.

Throughout the month I’ll have the kids make little crafts here & there such as painting faces on the miniature pumpkins & using construction paper to make pumpkin faces to hang on the windows as well, while I set out my fall themed flowers & decorations. I’ll also let the kids pick out gourds and other decorations when we visit the farmers market.

Vincent & Aidan Halloween 2011 – Carving Pumpkins

When the end of the month nears we’ll finally go pick out our pumpkins that we will carve, which of course is one of the most exciting things about Halloween for me. We’ll set them up outside near our back porch. This year I can’t wait to see what Aidan thinks. At only 2 years old he doesn’t remember last years festivities.

Our last activity of the year will be to put together bags of candy for the trick or treaters that come around to our house. We’ll be out trick or treating but usually there’s one adult hanging around the house to pass out candy to all the kids.

Vincent Halloween 2010 – Helping Mommy Get Candy Ready

This year we actually got our Halloween started early thanks to Kmart by adding another tradition to the mix. That was to let the 4 year old check out the Kostume Kreator. He loved playing around and finding his perfect costume. Of course he was pretty bent on being Spiderman this year. He’s had that figured out for months now. He loved the fact that he could place Spiderman in different backgrounds. In the end he decided to put him on a Pirate Ship to fight the bad pirates! Check him out below.
