Holiday Traditions – Scandinavian Gløgg

Now that the Holiday season is upon us, I’m reminded that as a new family we have very few holiday traditions. My extended family is very small and scattered  these days and to be honest they don’t even bother to send us Christmas cards.  So I believe it’s time to start focusing on my own house and traditions.

Once I had my own child it was very important to me that we start doing this. All those things I grew up with as a child that made the holiday season magical. Dinner at mom’s with our grandparents, decorating the tree together, sending and receiving cards and hanging them around the door, listening to holiday music as we eat our dinner.

Since my husband is from Norway and we don’t get to spend time with his family during the holidays I have decided to start incorporating some of their traditions, for my son and my husband.

One tradition the Norwegian people have is Gløgg or Glögg, as the Swedish spell it is more of a Swedish tradition and is a drink that is made during Advent season. Glögg is traditionally made with red wine but there are also non-alcoholic versions, which is the kind we drink. Almonds and raisins are usually added to it but are not necessary.  December in Scandinavia is a dark, wintry time, and this hot drink helps keep the spirits cheered.

Glogg

We actually receive our Gløgg directly from Norway but you can purchase it at Ikea. It’s called Tomte Glogg and it comes in a syrup type form which you can mix with water, wine, or spirits. But here is a traditional alcohol based recipe if you’re brave enough to try it. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Read more to see the recipe. Read More »

Little Music Lovers CD Series Review: Share the Joy of Music With Your Child

cd-music-Beethoven-final3Little Music Lovers - Beethoven Little Music Lovers - MozartLittle Music Lovers - Lullabies

I recently reviewed a sampler of the Little Music Lovers CD Series and we loved it.  Most moms have heard that there may be a benefit to playing music and singing for your baby while they are still in utero. I took that advice before my son was born. One of my favorite songs of all time happens to be Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. I made sure to play it often, and of course I sang to him while he was in my belly every day.  Once my son actually arrived I continued to play music and sing to him.

My son is now 18 months and I can tell you that music is a very big part of his life. I’m sure there are other mom’s who have children that are really into music but I honestly haven’t seen one that is into it quite as much as mine. He first tried to dance when he was only a few months old. Nowadays he dances at every commercial that has music, no matter what the style.  He’s memorized at least the beginning beats of songs by Lady Gaga and Metallica because he recognizes them the minute they start up. He even asks to hear them!  Ok and now here’s where the extreme comes in.  He even dances to the rhythmic sound of my washer spinning.  I told you he was really into music.

Do I think it had something to do with all the singing and music playing? Absolutely. Of course it may also have something to do with the fact that his mom played in the band at school for over 7 yrs and his dad is an accomplished musician with more than 5 cd’s under his belt. And guess where his parents met? Online in a music chat room.

Over the course of time music has changed the lives of many. It can lift you up, calm you down, and it can inspire you. Music has touched every one at some point in their lives. With all that, how can I NOT recommend that you play music to your child each and every day?  I recommend Little Music Lovers to get you started.  It’s a beautiful collection that you AND your child are sure to enjoy.

About The Collection

Little Music Lovers, a four CD series for children was recently released by Universal Music Classical in time for the holiday season.  The music collections provide parents with an opportunity to introduce their babies and toddlers to the world around them by incorporating beautiful, thought-provoking music from the famous Decca catalog.
Little Music Lovers contains famous works by renowned composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Mozart along with well-known lullabies that will accompany little ones through all of their daily activities including play time, story time and of course, bed time.

Classical music is believed by some researchers to cause “The Mozart Effect,” a phenomenon that can potentially aid in the development of math, reasoning and memory skills, while also giving babies and toddlers a head start on learning language.

The musical pieces found in the Little Music Lovers collection were carefully selected for their melodic content, as well as their impact in enhancing early childhood development.  Children will learn from the series, while parents can enjoy many hours of beautiful music.

Bach: Smart Music for Activity Time brings an assortment of fugues, suites, minuets, sonatas and more from some of the composer’s most recognizable music.  These pieces are stimulating, fun, exciting and will help bring a great atmosphere to you and your child’s lively times together!  Famous classical pieces include selections from “The Brandenburg Concertos,” “The Little” Fugue in G minor,” “Well-Tempered Clavier,” and much more!

Mozart: Smart Music for Play Time is the perfect way to enhance the day and bring a smile to your child’s face. Mozart wrote playful & whimsical melodies that are absolutely perfect for a play date.  The rhythms and the tempos of these famous concertos & serenades will be the perfect accompaniment for you and your child or for a group of children to enjoy!

Beethoven: Smart Music For Story Time will bring wonderful sounds and melodies to the imagery of your child’s most beloved books & tales.  Features the world famous “Fur Elise,” “Moonlight Sonata,” “The Last Rose of Summer,” and other distinguished piano sonata’s & symphonies!  Your child will learn to appreciate the wonders of story time in a brand new way – with music! Make the most of Story Time – add a soundtrack to your stories and fairy tales!  Stories come alive with the colorful and vibrant melodies of classical music.

Lullabies: Smart Music for Bed Time features timeless melodies that every child will learn and love.  Includes “Ave Maria,” “The Cradle Song,” “Beautiful Dreamer,” “When You Wish Upon a Star,” and more… Sweet Dreams! It can be a challenge for your child to take an afternoon nap or sleep soundly through the evening.  Little Music Lovers can help with relaxing and soothing music for bed time.

Little Music Lovers is available for sale at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders among other participating retailers.   For more information regarding this music release, visit www.LittleMusicLovers.com

I received a sampler cd of this collection from Universal through Rolemommy.com at my request. It did not sway my opinion in any way, shape or form, as I’m a true music lover at heart. The “About” section is information provided by Universal, the rest is my own opinion.

Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries

Fragrant Memories

Introducing Bare Skin, the first fragrance from Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries Exclusively for Sephora

Inspired by  Leslie Blodgett’s dynamic life, Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries is a limited edition fragrance collection, created exclusively for Sephora, that revisits and evokes pivotal moments in Leslie’s life. Having kept journals since she was a young girl, Leslie has captured the essence of every trip she has taken through the pages of her journals. With the release of its first fragrance Bare Skin on 10/08, these pages have been brought to life through scent, enabling Leslie’s ardent fans to walk a fragrant mile in her shoes.

Bare Skin, the first scent in the series, is reminiscent of an experience during a trip to Mexico, where Leslie cart-wheeled fancy-free down a sunny beach while emanating true, unbridled joy. “When I have an experience, I like to have a scent behind it. Bare Skin, which is what Mexico reminds me of, is the way you feel when the sun is beating down on you during the day, but then you go out at night and you’re still sizzling from the warmth of the day which mingles with the night air and the music.”

“Glowing, sun-kissed skin has the power to turn heads. I wanted to recreate that attractive force with notes that draw you in: creamy sensuality, caressing florals and uninhibited musk,” says Stephen Nilsen, the celebrated Givaudan perfumer who helped concoct Bare Skin. “With Bare Skin, you will find yourself basking in the sun, with your feet in the sand, after one spritz.”

Progresso Panko and Broth Review and Giveaway (Now Closed)

progresso_logo

Thanks to Progresso I have a new staple in my kitchen.  Progresso Panko Crispy Breadcrumbs.  Although I’d heard them mentioned a million times on the Food Network I had never actually used them.

Last week, thanks to Progresso and MyBlogSpark I received a package containing a box of Panko Breadcrumbs, 1 carton of Progresso low-sodium chicken broth, a measuring cup, slotted spoon, soup ladle and a sheet for baking.

Progresso_pankobreadcrumbs

I absolutely love to cook but I have to admit that I only have maybe 7 or 8 things that I can cook that are consistently good. I also love to watch the Food Network.  I’m always looking for new things to try, hints, tips.. anything to help me become a better cook.  Now that I have a child I figure I better learn how to cook properly before he’s old enough to invite friends over for dinner. I’ve always loved Progresso soups so I thought this would be a great chance for me to try something new.

It was only recently that I started cooking with broths.  I’ve pretty much incorporated them into all my big dishes, like meatballs, pot roast, etc. and I always choose the low sodium.  So I was very happy to see the reduced-sodium broth in my package.

Progresso 100% Natural Broth

Progresso broths are 100% natural and use high quality ingredients to achieve a great homemade taste. They are fat free, gluten free, contain no preservatives, no added MSG and no artificial flavors. Progresso broth is available in chicken and reduced sodium chicken and beef flavors. Progresso broths are the perfect thing to add to your leftovers to give them flavor along with moisture.

What Are Panko Breadcrumbs?

As I said earlier I had never used panko breadcrumbs or even seen them up close so I really had no idea what they were. I was surprised to learn that panko is made from bread without crusts. They are very white and the texture is coarse, yet light and crispy. Panko has traditionally been used in Japan or in fine dining restaurants and usually only found in specialty stores.  That is, up until now. Progresso’s panko is available in two flavors, plain and Italian. If you’ve never cooked with panko before, now is your chance because it’s never been easier thanks to Progresso.

Exciting Recipes and Cooking Tips Featuring Progresso Broth,  Panko Breadcrumbs And Celebrity Chef Michael Chiarello

In addition you can head on over to ProgressoFoods.com and ProgressoBroth.com where they have a lot of helpful cooking tips, videos, and exciting new recipes, all using Progresso panko bread crumbs and Progresso broth. They have even teamed up with celebrity chef Michael Chiarello who shares his expertise on casual weekend entertaining, preparing a holiday feast or inspiration for a weeknight meal. If they are still available you can also find coupons for both products on the site. Read More »
