“It was about 2 am and I woke up with pains in my lower abdomen.. I didn’t think anything of it at all.  I had Braxton hicks for probably two weeks prior, and simply thought this was just another case, but stronger. A few hours went by and I started to get restless. It was getting uncomfortable to sit straight. Again, I didn’t think anything of it. I did a lot of research that night. I went online and looked up signs of going into labor, and what I was experiencing was what I was reading as well. Still, I didn’t think too much of it.

I messaged a few other moms who had just had babies recently and asked how they knew. When I got their replies and realized that “okay, they were experiencing the same thing” I thought “okay, it’s finally time”. Only issue was: it was 5:30 am. Everyone was sleeping. I didn’t want to wake my boyfriend up because he worked that morning, and his mom did as well (we live with his parents) so I waited until 7:30 am, when his mother woke up. I went upstairs and simply said “I think I should go get checked out”

My boyfriend’s sister brought me to labor & delivery and they hooked me up to the machines. within 10 minutes, I had around 6 contractions. The doctor told me I was staying. He checked my cervix, and I was already 5 cm dilated. not even 5 minutes later, my water broke. That’s when I started to freak on the inside. I mean, I had been preparing for this moment all but 9 months, and it just felt all too real now. But I still wasn’t in pain like all the people said they felt prior to labor.

They did their tests on me, gave me some breathing techniques, and I was in my happy place. Only one issue: I was all alone in that room. My boyfriend was still at home, on his way up, and his sister had to go to an appointment. My mom hadn’t even made it up yet.

They asked me what I wanted to do for pain. I’ve researched for months about cons and pros of drugs, and I didn’t really wanna feel ‘loopy’ while delivering my son. So I went ”au naturel”. I went in the whirlpool bathtub and that was it. I laid in the bathtub for about 11 minutes. Then the contractions really started to hurt. I yelled to the nurse because after a few minutes, it was no contraction pain anymore.. it was “YOU NEED TO PUSH”

They helped me out of the tub, and onto the bed. My boyfriend showed up after a few pushes (FINALLY) and within an hour, my baby boy was in my arms and I was a mother.

I was in that delivery room for 1 hr, 47 minutes. My first baby, healthy as could be. First thing I thought of was: it was all worth it. I was 18 when I delivered him, 17 when I found out I was pregnant. I was still in school, and had so much put on my shoulders during my pregnancy. But after I held my baby boy for that first time, none of that mattered anymore. I was a mommy, my boyfriend a daddy. We had our own little family, and nothing could make me any happier!

Giving birth naturally with no drug in my system made me so happy, and made me realize that I’m so much stronger than I make myself out to be! I mean, anyone who’s had a baby sans drug can relate, it’s exhausting! And I did it! I stuck my ground, and I did it!”
