Seventh Generation Free & Clear Diapers–Review & Giveaway (Now Closed)

Seventh Generation, Free & Clear diapers have a brand new look. In an effort to contribute less overall landfill waste and continue to ensure a premium standard of absorbency, the new Free & Clear diapers have been redesigned with a lighter-weight core. With processed chlorine-free wood pulp in Free & Clear diapers, Seventh Generation also makes certain that no chlorine is released into the environment during the totally chlorine-free (TCF) whitening process of the diapers and training pants.

What Seventh Generation leaves out is just as important as what they put in.  Free & Clear diapers do not include:

  • chlorine processing
  • fragrances
  • latex and petroleum based lotions.

Seventh Generation has also reduced the size of the diapers’ plastic packaging, meaning that each pack now contributes even less overall landfill waste than before. In fact, Seventh Generation Free & Clear diaper packaging can now be recycled at local supermarkets where plastic bag recycling collection boxes are available.

The Review

We had a chance to check out the new free & clear diapers this week to see what all the fuss was about. We have only used Seventh Generation one other time and that was when my son was a newborn. Since I didn’t write a review then I thought I may have forgotten what it was I liked or disliked about them, but it just so happened that while I was cleaning out some boxes this week I found one of the old diapers. Unused of course! Thank goodness. (You never know with 2 boys in the house)

This is what I noticed about the new diapers:

  • Thinner overall
  • Insert area seems a bit whiter
  • Tabs are stretchier and no longer square shaped (far more flexible)
  • Diaper is more form fitting and less square

I have to say that the old diaper I am looking at as I write this is size 1 and the new diaper is size 4 so I am not sure if the size 1 diapers still have the square tabs but I am hoping these changes are overall because as I look at them I remember it was the one complaint I had about them when I first tried them. When I say tabs I mean the part you peel and stick to the other side of the diaper to keep it together. The tabs on the size 4 free & clear have much more give and are a lot stretchier and easier to use.

I have read a lot of reviews for the new free & clear diapers and a lot of people have said that they can’t hold as much but I don’t believe that’s true. My son is 9 months old, in the 95th percentile and he keeps one diaper on all night. These diapers held up to the test. We did have a couple close calls with blowouts but that was before I got to his diaper in the morning. That means he slept in the same diaper all night, then pooped in it and it held! That’s pretty amazing because when my first son was 9 months we tried almost all the diapers on the market and eventually had to switch to a night time diaper because none of them held.

You have to remember that 1 particular diaper is not going to be a good fit for all babies. All babies are different.  I can definitely say from experience that these diapers worked well for us. Just remember to take into consideration that as your baby gets older things change. You cannot really make comparisons as to when your child was 6 months and when your child was a year. The child uses the bathroom more frequently, is bigger, sleeps longer etc. You have to take these things into account.

Overall I was very happy with these diapers and if you are looking to have less of an impact on the environment then Seventh Generation may be a great fit for you and your baby.
